After confirming that Warzone 2 will also come out later this year, Activision has announced that the follow-up to 2020’s free-to-play battle royale game won’t necessarily replace the original. Instead, both multiplayer shooters will coexist with each other. Unfortunately, this means that Warzone 2 is a standalone title that will have a brand new progression system separate from Warzone. You don’t necessarily have to migrate to the upcoming game, but Activision Blizzard, as well as Infinity Ward, are giving you fewer reasons to do so. According to Activision, the progression reset is necessary so that Warzone 2 can deliver a “state-of-the-art experience” and run parallel as an “extension of the Modern Warfare 2 universe.” Activision promises that it will reveal more about Warzone 2 and its new sandbox mode as well as a “brand-new playspace” as we inch closer to its launch. Unfortunately, Activision gave no indication as to when that might happen. But, with less than three months between Modern Warfare 2’s launch on October 28 and the end of 2022, skeptical fans won’t have to wait too long to see if the “reset” is worth it. Some Warzone players are celebrating as they had expected Activision to wipe the slate for Warzone 2. On the other hand, some are disappointed that their progress in Warzone will amount to nothing in Warzone 2. Then again, Activision isn’t forcing current Warzone players to move on, but its player base will suffer, as is always the case whenever a new shiny plaything arrives. If nothing else, what Activision has done is a fine little compromise albeit one that’s playing things too safe. In other news, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be at the Summer Game Fest this June 9, as revealed by Activision in its first trailer.
