At the moment, Sony is actively working on a handful of upcoming films set in the SSU like Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and El Muerto, among others. Naturally, the studio also has its eyes set on the bigger prize, Venom. Despite so-so critical reviews, 2018’s Venom and its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, were received well at the global box office. In late April, Sony confirmed that a third Venom film is also in the works, which will likely pick up on the events following Spider-Man: No Way Home’s post-credits scene as Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock departure from Earth-199999 paved the way for his return in either the SSU or the MCU. Fast forward to today and Tom Hardy has released a photo hinting that the script writing process for Venom 3 has begun as he lends his talents to the story alongside Kelly Marcel.
However, one thing that stood out from the initial tease are the words “last dance”, which would suggest that Tom Hardy’s time in the SSU is coming to an end. If Venom 3 does mark the finale to Eddie Brock’s solo outings, we’re hoping that Sony and Marvel Studios have an ace up their sleeves that will make the conclusion worth it. Specifically, we’re hoping to see Venom square off against either Andrew Garfield or Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, both of which are a definite possibility. Ultimately, all Marvel fans can do for now is to wait for more updates. Unless Sony is eager to move up the timeline of Venom 3, we likely won’t see it until 2024 after El Muerto. The good news here is that there’s plenty of Spider-Man to go around until. In addition to the aforementioned SSU films, Sony is also working on two more sequels to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Not to mention, Sony’s PC ports of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, are both coming out later this year with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 scheduled for 2023.
