If you answered, “it hasn’t been a long time”, we understand. The COVID-19 pandemic might make it feel like three years haven’t passed since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. But, this is exactly how long it’s been since we last saw the ex-S.H.I.E.L.D director grace both the small and big screens. To put that into context, three films have premiered along with five Disney+ TV shows without one of the prominent figures of the MCU featuring.
Having said that, the Fury drought is about to come to an end as Samuel L. Jackson is set to start in Secret Invasion, an upcoming Marvel TV series that’s coming to Disney+ this year. So far, Marvel Studios has done an excellent job keeping a tight lid on Secret Invasion. But, as strict as Marvel is at keeping information a secret (pun intended), Marvel can’t stop the occasional leak. Case in point, recent photos from the set of Secret Invasion from Alan Milner suggest that Secret Invasion could take place much further into the future than expected.
— Alan Milner (@almilner05) January 23, 2022 Upon further inspection of the photos, Jackson is in full Nick Fury attire with his scarred and damaged left eye as well as the non-descript wardrobe on top of a disheveled look. This might suggest that Fury is retired or, worse still, in hiding. But, what is most interesting is that Jackson isn’t wearing his eyepatch. The theory here is that Secret Invasion takes place after Endgame, which makes a lot of sense given his untidy look. But, we also aren’t ruling out the possibility that the events of Secret Invasion happen around the time of 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We might see Secret Invasion explore what Fury was up to in between the events of Winter Soldier and Far From Home. Then again, it’s also easy to explain Fury’s uncharacteristically unkempt look in the leaked photos. For example, Fury might just have let himself go following his experience with the Blip and the Snap. Ultimately, only Marvel Studios knows what’s going to happen in Secret Invasion. The MCU might take inspiration from the original comic books, but it’s known to deviate as well. Case in point, 2008’s Marvel crossover event saw Nick Fury lead the Avengers against the invasion of shape-shifting Skrulls. But, from what we’ve seen so far, the MCU doesn’t have a team composed of the earth’s mightiest defenders right now. Judging by the look of things, Secret Invasion might see Nick Fury fight off the invading Skrulls on his own. Of course, this is all just speculation. Nick Fury is synonymous with mystery. We don’t know much about who Nick Fury is and what he’s usually up to when he’s off-screen. However, we’re hoping that Secret Invasion provides even just a tiny glimpse into the life of Nick Fury. In other MCU news, the MCU just released the first trailer for the Oscar Isaac-led Moon Knight ahead of its March 30, 2022, premiere. Meanwhile, Jaden Smith just sparked rumors of his appearance in the MCU with a masked selfie.
