According to Warner Bros., Multiversus is real and will be a free-to-play title for the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles, arriving within a 2022 release window.
Player First Games poke fun at Smash Bros. in Multiversus announcement
Earlier today, Warner Bros. started teasing a Multiversus announcement less than a month after news of the Smash Bros-like platform fighter came to light. However, unlike previous rumors, the game isn’t being developed by NetherRealm Studios. Instead, Player First Games are responsible for overseeing the ambitious fighter project. The studio is relatively new and it will be interesting to see if it can handle the audience’s expectations for Multiversus. Having said that, Player First Games is at least up for some good ol’ ribbing. In the official Multiversus announcement, the studio promised that Multiversus will feature “best-in-class” net code and dedicated servers. This is an obvious jab at Smash Bros. Nintendo’s popular crossover fighting game, which is infamous for its spotty online gameplay. Here is a complete list of the characters confirmed for Multiversus at launch:
Batman Superman Wonder Woman Harley Quinn Shaggy Bugs Bunny Arya Stark Tom and Jerry Jake the Dog Finn the Human Steven Universe Garnet Reindog
According to the game’s developers, more characters are going to join Multiversus’ roster in the future. This means that we might also see the other characters that were leaked earlier such as Gandalf the White from Lord of the Rings and NBA superstar Lebron James, among others. Meanwhile, as for the actual gameplay, Multiversus will focus on 2v2 fighting. However, the game will also have 1v1 fights and a 4-player free-for-all mode. Just as we mentioned earlier, Multiversus doesn’t have a proper release date yet. Instead, all Warner Bros. confirmed is that the free-to-play title will release in 2022. But, if it’s any consolation, Multiversus will hold a series of playtests that players can register for simply by using their email on the official website.
