The month comes strong with the release of Resident Evil Village, a new installment in the world’s most famous zombie series. Will we finally know the true intentions of Lady Dimitrescu whose appearance took over the internet? And who is Mother Miranda? For RPG and Sci-fi lovers, we have Mass Effect Legendary Edition with its improvements to experience the adventures of Commander Shepard. If you do not like sci-fi but enjoy RPGs and macabre rituals, Shin Megami Tensei III comes hot, straight from hell, to survive the Vortex World and align ourselves with Reason. Days Gone, formerly a Sony exclusive, debuts on PC after Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn. Will this become a trend? Without further ado, I present you the May Games Preview.
The Colonists
Release Date: May 4 (PS4/Xbox One/Switch) Developer Mode 7 and producer Auroch Digital has announced the release of the city-building game The Colonists for consoles. The game arrived on PCs via Steam in 2018. The settlement building game will feature some improvements to its console version. In addition to reworking the controls to make the gameplay experience more viable without using a keyboard and mouse, the interface has been optimized. The robots will have access to new hats to celebrate the release on more platforms. In the game, you control a team of robots as they simulate human civilization and roam the galaxy searching for a new home.
Resident Evil Village
Release Date: May 7 (PC/PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X/S) The biggest release of the month and probably one of the most significant games of the year. Resident Evil Village follows Resident Evil 7, putting the player again in the role of protagonist Ethan Winters. Once again, the systems engineer is put in an unusual and terrifying situation. Ethan is pursuing an old acquaintance of the series, Chris Redfield, who very apparently murdered his wife, Mia, and kidnapped their daughter Rose. Finding himself in a village in Eastern Europe, Ethan must fight seemingly supernatural creatures, including werewolves, the giant vampire Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters, and Heisenberg, her brother. Ethan’s sole motivation is finding his daughter and telling us who the hell Mother Miranda is.
Hood: Outlaws and Legends
Release Date: May 10 (PC/PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X/S) A new game from Sumo Newcastle studio and publisher Focus Home Interactive, Hood: Outlaws and Legends is a cooperative and competitive multiplayer action game inspired by the legends and tales of Robin Hood. In the game, two groups of four players will embody archetypal members of Robin’s gang, from Lady Marian to Will Scarlet and Little John, who aim to rob the vaults of a vast castle. In addition to competing against each other to see which team gets the treasure, players will also have to deal with the various guards and knights that inhabit the structure, including the Sheriff of Sherwood, a ruthless pursuer similar to Mr. X from Resident Evil 2 remake.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
Release Date: May 14 (PC/PS4/Xbox One) One of the most acclaimed and popular franchises of the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation, the Mass Effect trilogy finally gets a revamped collection that promises improvements to both the game’s visuals and gameplay. In particular, several mechanics from the first Mass Effect have been reworked to fit in with the second and third game, ranging from shooting mechanics, more forgiving morality checks, squadmate AI enhancements to driving the Mako vehicle. Not only that, the character creation system between the games has been unified, and nearly all DLC and expansions released over the years will be available right out of the box. Games choices will probably carry over between the sequels, and achievements/trophies are confirmed to stack.
Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind
Release Date: May 14 (Nintendo Switch) Initially released in the late 1980s and only in Japan, Famicom Detective Club was a series of adventure games in which the player investigates a series of mysteries and murders. In The Missing Heir, you have to solve a case involving a wealthy family and a haunted village, all while juggling with amnesia. In The Girl Who Stands Behind, call the Winchester family because you will investigate a supernatural rumor after a sinister death to free students from a creepy nightmare. For the first time in the West, The Missing Heir duology and The Girl Who Stands Behind will be released separately with English localization, a new look, and updated systems for the Nintendo Switch.
Subnautica: Below Zero
Release Date: May 14 (PC/PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X/S/Nintendo Switch) Set two years after the first Subnautica, Below Zero brings a new adventure on the mysterious planet 4546B, with players able to explore its frozen regions below zero degrees. Oh, I get it now. Like its predecessor, players must build different structures, vehicles, and equipment to explore more of the planet and discover its mysteries while trying to survive amidst dangers such as the planet’s fauna, flora, and environment. In addition to Below Zero’s release, the original Subnautica also comes to Nintendo Switch on the same date so you can dive in the ocean while commuting.
Days Gone
Release Date: May 18 (PC) After Death Stranding and Horizon: Zero Dawn, now it’s Bend Studio’s turn for Days Gone, formerly PlayStation exclusive, to migrate to PC. Initially released in 2019, Days Gone is a zombie-ridden post-apocalyptic action game. The player controls Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter who traded camp life for dangerous adventure on the road. Deacon traverses the US on his motorcycle until he becomes involved in a plot consisting of the infection’s origins that destroyed the world and the fate of his wife, Sarah. The game’s PC version will feature an unlocked frame rate, support for ultrawide screens with a 21:9 display, and numerous graphical and performance enhancements.
Knockout City
Release Date: May 21 (PC/PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X/S/Nintendo Switch) Knockout City blends arena game concepts with the frenzy and speed of a competitive multiplayer action game of dodgeball. In the game, players will compete on various maps of the titular Knockout City in different modes, ranging from Battle Royale to traditional Team Deathmatch. You can use many kinds of techniques and skills to throw special balls at your enemies, striving to hit as many times as possible. At launch, the game will already feature crossplay between all platforms.
Rust
Release Date: May 21 (PS4/Xbox One) One of the most popular titles on PC, the multiplayer survival game Rust will finally get a console version. In Rust, set in a barren open world, the player must find ways to survive and protect themselves by creating weapons, equipment, and structures to hunt and find more resources and survival. More than that, you have to watch out for other players inhabiting the same world, who depending on the circumstances, may help you or - most frequently - try to kill you to take your resources, your house, and your dignity.
Biomutant
Release Date: May 25 (PC/PS4/Xbox One) After long years of development and waiting, the action RPG Biomutant will finally be released for PC and consoles. Developed by Experiment 101, a studio from Avalanche Studio’s veterans, Biomutant puts the player in the role of a small anthropomorphized mammal that can learn many different skills, combat styles and suffer new mutations. The action gameplay differs according to your martial arts or firearms. You can alter your playstyle from a melee commando bulldozer to a PSI-freak, the game’s magic-user. In the story, a mysterious liquid kills the so-called Tree of Life, causing chaos to the world’s creatures around it. As the player journeys across the New World, your choices will lead to other consequences and endings. You can opt to create a new society and revive the Tree becoming the world savior or not necessarily. You will encounter several different factions and characters to interact and build your Karma. In addition, while going on his adventure, the player can also modify his character via genetic mutations and cybernetic implants.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster
Release Date: May 25 (PC/PS4/Nintendo Switch) A remastered version of one of Atlus’s greatest classics, Nocturne is the third game of Shin Megami Tensei, one of the most traditional Japanese RPG franchises. Initially released for PlayStation 2, SMT III: Nocturne is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Tokyo, also known as Vortex World, in which the player controls the so-called Demi-fiend, a high school student who has acquired supernatural powers and can fight and recruit the demons that inhabit the city. As you progress through the story and interacts with the different factions of this world, you will unlock different endings to the narrative. The remaster features graphical improvements, a new difficulty mode, voice dialogs, and updated English localization.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries
Release Date: May 27 (Xbox One/Xbox Series X/S) Available for PC, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries now arrive for Xbox platforms at the end of May. Set in the year 3015, after humanity colonized thousands of star systems, this mech-centered game puts the player in control of a young mercenary. Your goal is to bring your father’s company back to its former glory by completing special contracts to recruit new members, acquire new mechs, and increase his reputation in the world. The game is a first-person mech-builder where you will invite your enemies for early recycling. This version features a cooperative mode between up to 4 players.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground
Release Date: May 27 (PC/PS4/Xbox One/Nintendo Switch) A new fast-paced strategy game based on Games Workshop’s famous brand, Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground, puts the player in control of factions in this dark fantasy world: the eternal Stormcasts, the ghoulish Nighthaunt, or the newly revealed faction to join the fray, The Maggotkin of Nurgle. Lead one of three highly customizable armies to glory by vanquishing your enemies in a roguelike single-player or defeating others online. During campaigns, players will recruit, expand and strengthen their mighty armies with the power of cards, which grants you new units, skill, weapons, and gears.
World’s End Club
Release Date: May 28 (Nintendo Switch) Originally released for iOS, World’s End Club is a collaboration between the directors of two of the most acclaimed visual novel series of recent times: Kotaro Uchikoshi of Zero Escape and Kazutaka Kodaka of Danganronpa. The game begins similarly to Danganronpa, with a group of young people trapped in a mysterious facility who must participate in a “Game of Destiny.” Suddenly, however, the game is canceled, and the young people return to a seemingly desolate Japan, setting off on an extraordinary journey that mixes sidescrolling action with narrative decisions.
