Ford recently spoke to Empire about the new movie and said it wasn’t necessary. “I didn’t feel it was necessary to do another one,” Ford shared. “I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones was at the end of his journey.” Ford explained that he would take on a new movie “if a script came along that I felt gave me a way to extend the character.” The script for the fifth movie delivered what Ford wanted for a sequel to 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The screenplay which extended the character proved too good to pass up. Despite his doubts, Ford took the opportunity to star as Indiana Jones for the final time and was happy with the results. “It’s full of adventure, full of laughs, full of real emotion. And it’s complex and it’s sneaky,” Ford shared about his experience filming Indiana Jones 5. “The shooting of it was tough and long and arduous, but I’m very happy with the film that we have.” Filming was indeed difficult for the 80-year-old actor. He even injured himself in one of the fight sequences for the new movie. Adding to Ford’s age was director James Mangold’s choice to use practical effects instead of employing CGI during the production of the movie. It is an interesting choice given the age of his main actor. The filming took place mainly in the US but also featured several other locations like Sicily, Morroco, and Glasgow. The team is trying its best to give audiences a proper globe-trotting adventure that has been the staple of the franchise. Scenes were shot in actual crypts, bazaars, and underwater instead of using green screens and CGI. The movie included scenes set in 1944 during World War II and involved replicas of Nazi-era vehicles. The film used real helicopters, horses, trains, and planes during filming. “Every type of vehicle, every country, we have scenes that are recreating really iconic, giant events,” producer Simon Emanuel shared. Production started in the UK on June 24, 2021, and concluded on February 26, 2022. It will be the final curtain for the Indiana Jones series. The movie also stars Mads Mikkelsen as the antagonist alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge and John Rhys-Davies. The yet-to-be-titled Indiana Jones 5 movie will premiere on June 30, 2023. Ford will next appear in Marvel’s The Thunderbolts movie as General Theodore “Thunderbolt” Ross.
