According to Activision Blizzard, Modern Warfare 2 has sold $800 million worth of copies in its first weekend, which is higher than the previous record-holder, 2011’s Modern Warfare 3. The game’s predecessor/sequel (we know, the naming gets confusing) took more than five days to post similar numbers and a little over two weeks to hit a billion. Modern Warfare 2 should hit similar figures in a few days. With its numbers, the only game to beat Modern Warfare 2 is Grand Theft Auto 5.

— CharlieIntel (@charlieINTEL) November 1, 2022 Modern Warfare 2’s success is unprecedented but it’s not unexpected. After back-to-back sub-par years, Activision Blizzard wants to make a statement with Modern Warfare 2, and it’s safe to say it has accomplished its mission. Before its launch, Infinity Ward rolled out the campaign early and everyone couldn’t help but salivate at the realistic graphics. Now that the multiplayer has launched and players are loving it. Well, except for the part where you can get banned from the game for seemingly no reason. Ultimately, we’re most interested in how the game’s week-long billion-dollar heist will be a factor in Microsoft’s long-delayed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Sony will use the figures to its advantage. On the other hand, Microsoft Gaming’s CEO, Phil Spencer, will point to his recent commitment to bringing Call of Duty on PlayStation for as long as the console is on the market. After all, it’s impossible for a game to post such astronomical figures if it’s only available on the Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X. At the end of the day, you can’t deny the impressive numbers that Modern Warfare 2 just posted. It’s proof that the series is still not past its prime. Fingers crossed, Activision Blizzard will justify the enormous support by ensuring Modern Warfare 2 is in a healthy and playable state as soon as possible.
