Well, Grand Theft Auto or whatever other major IP Rockstar Games might be working on right now. So yeah, probably GTA 6. The job opening is for a Visual Effects Artist to join the company’s New England office as a full-time employee.
Now, Rockstar Games might seem like a dream job for many in the industry due to its prominence, size and popularity. While it definitely would be a huge step in someone’s career, the company has had its issues with problematic amounts of crunch, and was the subject of an exposé about workplace conditions during the development of Red Dead Redemption 2. Reportedly Rockstar has done much to improve since then, but applicants should know what they’re signing up for. Probably this isn’t a great choice if you have a family, for example. That said, if you have the skills needed to cut it as a VFX artist at a company as reputable at Rockstar, you might end up having a hand in developing one of the most anticipated games in the market right now - possibly of all time. Fans have been getting pretty crazy about GTA 6 despite it not even being officially announced yet. While most of the job listing is about required qualifications, skills, aptitudes that come in as a bonus and other typical boring serious things, some of the role descriptions do have a bit of meat on them. Sure, these don’t directly infer that any of the mentioned features will specifically be in a game, and naturally GTA 6 isn’t mentioned directly, but we can pretty confidently make educated guesses here. Take this leap of logic with us, and arrive to the assumption that this might mean that dynamically destructible scenery is coming to GTA 6. It might be a stretch, but it seems like a natural fit for a game that lives and thrives on mayhem, chaos and over the top action. We’ve already established how GTA is the most likely candidate here, too. Now, usually principal development on GTA titles takes place at Rockstar North, but when a major AAA developer cooks a huge game like this, you can bet on them pulling talent from multiple studios. Rockstar is pretty spread out across the world, and large companies like this usually have multiple studios collaborating on projects - North is just the leader, so to speak. Of course, at the end of the day this is all speculation. The job posting does not indicate any degree of interactivity, specific features, what game it is for or if the job even concerns a new game. Maybe if you apply and get hired, you’ll be churning out GTA Online DLC! We can only hope the implications are further reaching. In any case, even the most optimistic estimates made by reliable sources have GTA 6 launching no sooner than 2025, so we’re going to have to wait a long, long time before we find out whether or not you’ll be able to drop buildings onto your enemies in it.
