Biomutant is part of the handful of video games released after the launch of the Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5 that won’t support next-gen consoles outright. Instead, owners of Microsoft and Sony’s newest flagship consoles will only be able to play Biomutant using the backwards compatibility feature, which shouldn’t be that big of a problem but it is. What usually happens when you play a game released for earlier consoles on next-gen hardware is that it plays better. Unfortunately, fans are worried that Biomutant won’t play just as well on the PS5 or Xbox Series S/X.
The Issue With the Biomutant Next-Gen Performance
Popular gaming forum, ResetEra, has seen several gamers compile tweets from THQ Noric to try and piece together why the next-gen performance of Biomutant might pose a problem. In particular, one tweet stands out where THQ Norid says that Biomutant will not run at native 4K on the PS5. Instead, Biomutant will run on an upscaled 4K from a native 1080p.
Biomutant is currently running at native 1080p upscaled to 4k on PS5. — THQ Nordic (@THQNordic) May 20, 2021 Although this is better than 1080p at 60fps on the PS4 Pro, you’d expect Biomutant to be available at native 4K and not upscaled on the PS5. Another tweet from THQ Nordic also says that Biomutant will run at 1440p at 30fps on the Xbox Series S. Worse still is that there’s no gameplay footage of Biomutant on the Xbox Series S. Their reason? Apparently, no one at THQ Nordic owns an Xbox Series S. What’s perhaps the biggest surprise is that Biomutant will run at a native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second on the Xbox Series X. THQ Nordic cites “technical reasons” why it’s different for the PS5 when both sport similar hardware anyway. Not to mention, the Xbox Series S is more powerful than the Xbox One X, and yet, Biomutant can only run at 30 frames per second on the toned-down version of Microsoft’s latest console. At the moment, there’s no clear explanation why there’s such a huge performance disparity of Biomutant on next-gen consoles. Some are blaming Experiment 101. Meanwhile, others are saying that it’s Sony’s fault as the PS5 supposedly has limited support for backwards compatibility. With that said, one thing that’s clear right now is that Biomutant is going to run best on the Xbox Series X. THQ Nordic has yet to confirm if Biomutant with next-gen upgrades for the Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5 is in the works. But, then again, Biomutant has yet to release. This means that THQ Nordic still has some time to work on the proverbial kinks. Who knows? Biomutant could very well perform better on the Xbox Series S and PS5 at launch on May 25.
